Cap sensors versus flow-through sensors

Choose cap sensors for lighter weight and simple setup

Cap sensors screw onto the valve stem like a valve cap. They are the logical choice for many trailers with standard rubber stems because the manufacturer specifically permits that pairing. You normally remove the sensor to add air.

Choose flow-through sensors for easier inflation

Flow-through sensors allow inflation through the sensor body, but they are larger and heavier. TST’s instructions should be followed for valve-stem suitability; metal stems are the conservative choice for heavier flow-through hardware.

Setting pressure alerts correctly

Start with the RV or tire manufacturer’s load and inflation guidance, not a percentage copied from another rig. Tire pressure must support the actual load. A properly obtained loaded-axle or individual-wheel weight gives you much better information than trailer length or dry weight.

  1. Inspect tire age, condition, load rating, and valve stems.
  2. Set cold inflation pressure using the applicable manufacturer guidance.
  3. Program each sensor to its correct tire position.
  4. Set low, high, and temperature thresholds intentionally.
  5. Install the repeater and confirm every sensor reports before travel.
  6. Test the system after tire service or sensor-battery replacement.

Strengths

Clear tire-by-tire information: the display identifies which programmed position triggered an alert. Expandable format: additional compatible sensors can support more tires or configurations, subject to the current system instructions. Replaceable external sensors: cap sensors can be serviced without breaking the tire bead.

Limitations

External sensors add a small amount of mass to each valve stem and must be installed correctly. Any sensor can give misleading information if programmed to the wrong position or if alert thresholds are poorly chosen. Pressure shown while driving also rises naturally as tires warm, so the display does not replace understanding normal hot-pressure behavior.

The system reports conditions at the sensor; it cannot determine tire age, internal structural damage, overload, lug-nut torque, bearing condition, or road hazards.

For an RV owner who wants four external sensors, a dedicated color display, and an included repeater, the TST 507 is a well-defined package. Its value comes from early warning and visibility—not from making tire maintenance automatic.
